With volleyball over it's now time to focus on another sport: basketball. The North Lamar Pantherettes have already opened their season and with the team losing key members last season, they are looking to returning players to help lead this year.
Enter Sydnee Prunty. Returning from last season, Sydnee is hoping to help this team bring a second consecutive district title. Prunty, like the other returning players, are having to adjust to a new coach this year. Brett Harp replaced Chris Arledge at the helm this year and so far the Pantherettes are 2-0.
"There's not a huge difference," Sydnee said when asked about the playing for the two coaches. "We come in here everyda with the same work ethic and mindset."
With the exception of a three year stay in Allen, Texas, Sydnee has lived in Paris. She has attended North Lamar for seven years and she only plays basketball. She started playing the sport when she was six years old through a church program called upward bound.
"The main reason I like playing basketball is because it's such a competitive sport and you have to have an incredible amount of endurance in order to keep up," she said.
The 5'-9" junior knows that basketball is more than an individual sport too. She says that being a part of the team is what she likes most. She is quick to point out that her team is her family and they each have a special connection and bond with each other.
"The fact that I can come to school and know I have a group of girls that always have my back and are willing to sacrifice themselves for me is my favorite part."
Sydnee's favorite subject is English and she hopes to get a bachelor of science degree in counseling, although she's not sure which college yet. When she's not working or playing basketball, Sydnee said she enjoys to shop. Right now, though, it's all about basketball and trying to get better.
"Sometimes it's not just about playing on a team. Of course playing can be play a role in stress relief, and teach you about attitude and working together. But simply being a part of team is what I like most."
