When thinking about sports at the High School level, sometimes golf gets overlooked in the mix. Although there is a golf team, it is the one sport in which you aren't competing against anyone, but rather against a course. It's just you and the course for 18 holes.
This week's athlete knows this concept all too well. Kristen Hodges took up golf two and a half years ago. Although it's the only sport she plays, Kristen says she's learned a lot from golf.
"You have to pace yourself. It is a team sport but it's also individual. I've really learned what I was capable to do on my own." - Kristen Hodges
One of the things she likes about golf is playing in the tournaments. It's an opportunity to play with different players.
"You're not with your teammates and you're placed with someone different every time, so you meet a lot of new people."
Although she only plays one sport, Kristen is very active at North Lamar. She's attended the school her whole life, and now she finds herself the secretary of the Beta Club, the FCA Chaplin, a Student Council member and she's a member of the National Honor Society.
"[Kristen] is very dedicated when it comes to golf. She's always asking me when and where we are practicing before I've even thought about it." - Golf coach > Chris Clark
When she's not heavily involved with her school responsibilities, Kristen enjoys spending time with family and friends. She also loves to read, which is why literature is her favorite subject in school.
Although she's not completely sure what she wants to do after High School she does plan on attending PJC for a year before transferring somewhere. She's thinking about a major in education or broadcast journalism.
Congratulations Kristen Hodges for being this week's Guaranty Bank and Trust Athlete of the Week.
