This week’s athlete is a multi-sport junior at North Lamar. Not only does Macie Pointer shine on the volleyball court, but she can also be seen running track and playing soccer.
Although she plays several different sports, she will be quick to tell you that volleyball is her favorite.
“I’m a very competitive person,” Macie says. “Volleyball has always been fast paced for me. I like the speed of the game. It’s so intense and exciting.”
Pointer is also quick to point out how much she loves playing with the current team at North Lamar.
“I like the team atmosphere on the court,” she explains. “Especially with these girls. I love playing with them so much. We just all click together and pick each other up.”
Like other teammates, Pointer knows head coach Sara Beth Upchurch is a big part of why the team is so close. Upchurch, in her first year at North Lamar, as already made a huge impact on the volleyball team.
“She’s definitely one of the best coaches I’ve ever had,” Macie says. “She has so much love and knowledge for the game, that it’s easy to listen to her and understand.”
Pointer says part of the reason is because Upchurch knows their potential and she keeps each player accountable.
“She’s not afraid to embarrass us if we’re not playing our best.”
Of course, Macie is referring to coach Upchurch’s unique style of coaching. In a district game against Paris, coach Upchurch wasn’t happy with her team’s effort. She called a timeout and made them run sprints for the entire minute.
“I can tell that she has put so much of her time into us individually and as a team,” Pointer continues. “I have a lot of respect for her.”
“Having never played middle before this year,” coach Upchurch says about the junior. “Macie dominated that position from day one. She is determined to be the best she can be in everything she does. Her work ethic is unparalleled.”
When she’s not playing volleyball, soccer or running track, you can find Macie hanging with friends and family. She also says she likes watching movies, eating or just hanging out outside.
Macie says she hasn’t thought too much about life after high school. She has entertained the idea of playing volleyball in college, though.
