The North Lamar Panthers took on Gilmer in the first round of the playoffs this weekend in Mt. Pleasant and only needed two games to take care of the Buckeyes.
Game 1: North Lamar 10 Gilmer 6
A pattern from the end of the season continued against Gilmer this weekend. North Lamar’s bats came alive. North Lamar had 11 hits in game one against the Buckeyes en route to 10 runs. North Lamar was the visiting team in the first game and sent Ty Jones to the mound.
Ty pitched seven innings for North Lamar. He gave up six earned runs on nine hits. He had four walks and struck out six.
After scoring one run in the second inning, Gilmer would put up three in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The resiliency of the Panthers, though, showed as they quickly scored four runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth. They would tack on one more in the seventh to get them their 10 runs.
Trey Scudder came up twice with the bases loaded and he delivered both times. Scudder had an RBI single the first time. Then, the in the fifth inning, he drove in two with another single to left field.
Kevin Dickey also had three RBI for the Panthers on two hits. North Lamar was patient at the plate as they had eight walks to only one strikeout.
Of the eleven hits, 10 of them were singles. Only Evan Niblett had an extra-base hit for North Lamar.
Game 2: North Lamar 6 Gilmer 3
Game two started off in a way in which you thought it wasn’t the Panthers day. North Lamar stranded six runners on base through the first four innings of the game. In those four innings they had runners in scoring position each time as well. However, after four innings, it was a 3-0 lead for Gilmer.
The fifth inning proved to be the difference, though. North Lamar sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five of them. Brayden Steed got on base with a single. Steed would steal second and then reach third when the throw from the catcher went to center-field.
Chad Box would single him home. After Box was picked off at first, Trey Scudder continued his hot streak as he doubled on the first pitch he sees.
Kevin Dickey would follow that with a double, scoring Scudder. Ty Jones singled and Dickey would score on another throwing error by the catcher. With the game now tied at three, North Lamar would add on two more runs when Jake Wynn hits an RBI single and a Tyler Biard has a sacrifice bunt.
North Lamar would add one more insurance run in the sixth inning but wouldn’t need it as they closed out the game and the series. Dickey pitched a great game for the Panthers. Kevin pitched 6 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits. He finished with 11 strikeouts as well. Niblett came in and finished the game with a strikeout for North Lamar.
North Lamar will now face Van in the Area Round of the playoffs. The location and times have yet to be determined.
