Nothing gets over a loss like winning a baseball game. That's exactly what the North Lamar Panthers did Monday night when they took down state-ranked Pleasant Grove in Texarkana. Two nights after falling to Paris High 3-1 in 10 innings, North Lamar. Took down the Hawks 8-5.
It started early for North Lamar as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Brayden Steed got things going for the Panthers with a single. He would come around and score when Trey Scudder reached on an error. A double by Jake Roberts would bring Scudder home. Ashton Chaffin would close out the scoring in the inning with an RBI single which plated Roberts.
Pleasant Grove would quickly take the lead as they would score four runs of their own in the second inning. The score would remain that way until North Lamar scored a couple in the fourth inning. Jake Wynn singled to left. Austin Stephens came in as a courtesy runner and would come around to score on a single by Chaffin. That single would also score Roberts, who had walked earlier in the inning.
Matt Gibbons went the distance on the mound for North Lamar. He allowed five runs but none of them were earned. He gave up four hits, struck out four and walked two in the seven innings he pitched.
North Lamar would add one more in the fifth and a couple more in the sixth while the Hawks could only get one more runner across home plate. The win secures second place for North Lamar in district. It's also the first loss for the Hawks in district. Both teams will close out play Tuesday night.
