The Panthers ended the first half of district play with a 45-43 victory over Liberty Eylau at home. They didn't make it easy, either. After an up and down first quarter, the Panthers' offense stalled in the second.
Taking a 17-16 lead into the second quarter, North Lamar was outscored 11-4 in the second frame. The offense picked back up in the second half, though. The fourth quarter, though, is where the drama happened.
With the game tied at 40 and the Panthers in possession of the ball, North Lamar decided to play for one shot. While most people were probably expecting Menderiz Gray or Tyler Hill to take the last shot, the heroics came from a different place. Jay Walters, who had already scored 14 points for North Lamar, got the ball in the corner with nine seconds left. Having made four from behind the arc all he had to do was pump fake. The LE defender bit and Walters drove to the hole. Walters hit the running floater with three seconds left in the game to put North Lamar up by two.
That shot would secure the victory for the Panthers as they move to 2-3 in district. They will host the Paris Wildcats on Tuesday night at approximately 7:30.
