The Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA) held its state competition in San Antonio on March 5-8.  North Lamar High School had three students qualify to compete. Many of the schools were not able to attend due to weather related issues.

NLHS Sophomore Ty Rast was able to take his test on-line for Health Care Administration ahead of time.  Freshman Melody Shannon and Sophomore Brock Garrison both were to compete in Public Speaking events.  Sponsors Yvonne Parson and Angela Shannon were notified early Friday morning that these students would be competing by Skype later that day.

“The only way we could get the Skype connection was on a cell phone,” said Parson.  “The lighting in the room was not working with the connection, so two other cell phones with flash lights were used to light the contestants for their speeches.”

After two rounds, Shannon placed second in Public Speaking I.  She will advance to the National FBLA Conference in June that will be held in Chicago.  Garrison placed fourth in Public Speaking II and is an alternate to nationals.
