North Lamar seniors, Seth Gurley, left, and Jared Chenevey, right, proudly represented North Lamar High School as they debated their way to earning medals from the State UIL Speech and Debate Tournament in Austin. In a tight-knit competition, Chenevey placed third in Persuasive Speaking while Gurley got fourth in the same event.
“It was a monster final round,” said sponsor Kristi Hodgkiss. “One change in rank by one judge could have given the championship to any of the top four . . . there were two points between first and fourth. I am so proud of them.”
Gurley and Chenevey will attend the University of Texas at Tyler in the fall and will continue to debate.
