Stone Middle School eighth grader Darbie Thompson wears four medals she earned at the 18th Annual Sports Extravaganza in Irving, Texas, that was hosted by Grand Prairie ISD and Irving ISD.  During the competitive event on October 28-29, Thompson earned first place medals in the shot put and 400 meter run while capturing second place wins in both the 100 meter run and running long jump.  Thompson began competing at the Sports Extravaganza in the third grade.

Sponsored by Region 10 Education Service Center and the Lions Club International District 2-X1 and 2-E2, the sporting event encourages physical fitness among children with visual impairments from infants to 22 year olds.  Its aim is to lower the barrier encountered by students with visual impairments so they can benefit from physical fitness.  Through this annual event, inactivity is replaced by dynamic participation in a variety of activities that encourage students to live a more active lifestyle and lead them to engage in lifelong leisure, recreation, and competitive sports.
