North Lamar Boys Win Season Opener

After losing nine players from the 2015 squad that advanced to the Area Championship, Coach Aaron Welch knew that there would be plenty of challenges going into the 2016 season. With a diverse starting lineup including five returning starters and three freshmen, North Lamar took to the pitch on a chilly Tuesday night at Community to open season play.

NL was up to their first test. Two starting freshmen, Rino Moore (2) and Kshatiz Basnet (10), scored their first varsity goals, with senior Logan Thomas (6) adding a third. On defense with senior Nick West (1) returning in goal, the Panthers held Community to just two goals to win the match 3-2.

With a team made up of strong senior leaders that have tasted success in the NL varsity soccer program and the Young Guns (as Coach Welch calls them), NL has plenty to be excited about this season. Welch stated that with a lot of new faces on varsity, this is a new team. He adds that this is a good first showing and a great first game.

NL’s JV squad tied Community 1-1 earlier in the evening. NL’s next match will be Tuesday, January 12th, as they travel to face Sunnyvale.
