NL Kicks Off 2019 Season
November saw over 100 students try out for North Lamar Soccer...by far the most the program has ever seen. These student-athletes worked through November and December to prepare for a season of change. Realignment places them in a new district while the boys program has a new head coach in Mark Caldwell.
On Tuesday night, the NL girls travelled to Longview to open the season facing a feisty Spring Hill squad. Abbie Fischer scored a 1st half goal and the Pantherettes trailed 2-1 at the half. NL gave up three 2nd half goals, falling 5-1 in a disappointing start to the season.
Meanwhile back at R.L. Maddox stadium, the boys hosted Denison in their season opener. The JV squad started off the night with a 2-0 win, goals scored by Dylan Guenther and Juan Gallegos.
The Varsity squad started off with a furious attack resulting in a goal by Matt Meredith just one minute into the match. Just under two minutes later Denison answered with a goal. The tie would hold though the rest of the half. Kshitiz Basnet scored on a breakaway goal early in the 2nd half to give NL a 2-1 lead. Minutes later Osvaldo “Oz” Palomares scored off the assist from Meredith pushing the Panther lead to 3-1.
Seemingly in control of the match, NL discipline broke down allowing Denison opportunities to get back in the match. The result was that the Panthers gave up three goals in the last 25 minutes to fall 4-3.
Both varsity squads opened play in the Kings Classic Tournament at Paris High on Thursday. The boys tied Texas High 1-1 in early afternoon action, while the girls later tied Alvarado 1-1. The goal was scored by Keraghan Scott.
The boys will face Farmersville at 1pm on Friday and Kennedale at 8am on Saturday. Meanwhile the girls face McKinney at 11:30am on Friday and Texas High at 9:30am on Saturday. All games will be at Paris High.
