Coming off their second place finish at the Van tournament, the North Lamar Pantherettes found themselves back on the hardwood Tuesday night. This time they were playing the Denison Lady Yellowjackets. It took North Lamar a little time to get going, but when they did you could tell as they swept Denison 25-22, 25-12, 25-16.
After a back and back first set, Denison jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the second half. North Lamar started the frame strong as they held a five point lead at 7-2. Denison rattled off eight straight points to take a 10-7 lead. North Lamar, on the strength of Jerika Johnson, rallied to finish the second set on an 18-2 run. The Pantherettes never looked back.
"Early in the season, I like how different people are stepping up and willing to do whatever the team needs," head coach Sara Beth Upchurch said after the game. "Tonight, it showed that we have people ready to go from the bench and also people ready to step up when another teammate is having an off night. We definitely need to refine and clean up some things, but I'm confident in this group's ability to do anything."
North Lamar easily won the third set to finish he sweep. Kenley Coston led the team with 11 kills. She also finished 14 of 14 from the service line with three aces. Coston had four digs and three blocks.
Ashley Trenchard finished the game with seven kills for North Lamar. Macy Pointer had five and was six of eight from the service line with an ace. Johnson led the team in serves, going 17 of 19 with a pair of aces.
Abby Nielsen finished with three kills while Hutton Pointer and Noel Rainey each had two. Jaycie Proctor was a perfect four for four in serves. She also led the team with six digs. Emma Doyal was 14 of 16 on serves and had 19 assists.
The freshman and JV also won their matches against Denison. The Fresham won in three games: 18-25, 25-14, 26-24. The JV won in two: 25-12, 25-11.
